The Citizens’ Energy Forum was established in 2008, and meets annually to explore consumers’ perspective and role in the EU energy market towards achieving the clean energy transition. It directly feeds into the work of the European Commission in the energy and consumer policy areas.

As last year, the event is being organised by the European Commission in collaboration with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), Ireland’s independent energy and water regulator.

It is the first Citizens’ Energy Forum taking place after the adoption of the European Green Deal.

The Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and the Irish Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan open the event, which will focus on how to ensure a fair and inclusive transition leaving no one behind, as we move towards climate neutrality by 2050 and lay the foundations for sustainable recovery in Europe. It will look at consumer engagement and empowerment, consumer protection including just transition and energy poverty and finance, in order to maximise benefits to all citizens.

The second day, Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders will present the New Consumer Agenda in which the Commission has outlined the key horizontal priorities of EU’s consumer policy for the coming years. This should also draw energy stakeholders’ interests, in particular as regards consumer empowerment in the green and digital transition and protection of vulnerable consumers.

This year’s event will be a digital meeting. The participatory tool Sli.do will be used for on-line polls and Q&A, using the event code #En4Cit.
